Compulsory School Attendance

I learned recently that South Carolina has a Compulsory School Attendance law. I guess I always knew there was a law, but I didn't think it was actually enforced until Haden missed a couple of days for illness, and we received this little gem of a brochure from District 50 in the mail:
This brochure is foolish to the maximum degree.
There was a letter from Pinecrest accompanying this brochure that more or less threatened legal action if Haden missed more unexcused days. Note that since Haden was sick, his absences are excused.
However, if I want to take my kids on vacation for a week during the school year, or keep them out for any other reason, that is my prerogative. It is nobody's business outside of my household.
This law is the equivalent of mandating that everyone have a job -- which is lunacy and an unfathomable interference in the personal lives of citizens.
