Mortgage Refinance

April 30, 2009

I locked in a new interest rate and completed an application for a mortgage refinance today. We're going to save $363 per month with the new rate.

Checking in on some changes going on at schools I attended here in Greenwood

This is where Southside used to be; it's completely gone now. What you see here is to be the new Mathews Elementary.

Speaking of Mathews...

...it still looks the same.

This is the car-riders' entrance to Mathews. I can clearly remember the first time I walked in there in 1981. I spent the following school year bored. I actually didn't learn anything I did not already know until 2nd or 3rd grade.

Since I took the risk of parking my car on Gage Street for this photo, I hope it arouses good memories (for former GATAS students) of Dr. Bob, bean bags, lofts, and that phenomenal playground.

Here's a Mustang (I'm guessing late 1960s) we saw parked in Washington. I like its license plate.

The Lost Symbol

April 22, 2009

The Lost Symbol, Dan Brown's sequel to The Da Vinci Code, is set to be published on September 15, 2009, and I just pre-ordered it on Amazon.

I know The Da Vinci Code caught a reputation as being the literary equivalent of the shallow end of the swimming pool, but I enjoyed it is spite of that.

"Probably J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter stories, is the current champ when it comes to back story. You could do worse than read these... (also, the Harry Potter novels are just fun, pure story from beginning to end.)"

-- Stephen King

Hey, I like George Orwell, Anne Rice, John Steinbeck, David McCullough, Harper Lee, and Mark Twain as much as anyone else, but that doesn't preclude me from being captivated by authors like Dan Brown and J.K. Rowling, whose books are absolutely fun to read.

Wouldn't you know it.

The same day -- the very same day -- that I paid off one of our cars, our washing machine broke and I had to buy a new one.

Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

One of the first things people learn upon approaching the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is that you will conduct yourself in respectful silence while you are there, or the guard will call you out by shouting at you.

Inside the Capitol

If you're going to tour the Capitol, I recommend arranging your tour through one of your Senators' office, versus getting a tour through the Capitol Visitor's Center.

We arranged the tour through DeMint's office, and we got a tour guided by one of his interns and we got to ride the private subway used by Senators to get from their offices to the Capitol. I requested a tour from Gresham Barrett's office first, but they never responded.

Haden checking out the dome in the Capitol

That's all the pictures I have for today. We took the subway back to the hotel; it would have been more exciting if we had not been dead tired.
We're going to the Hershey's Chocolate factory tomorrow.
