When the Waters Rose in the Darkness
August 27, 2011
Granny, bless her heart, bought me these highwater pajama pants for Christmas. I wear them proudly.
Random Picture Friday
August 26, 2011Random Picture Friday is a video this week. As of Monday, have a new person to add to our people list. Pics of little Owen will be coming soon.
So, in the spirit of crying babies, I present three chicks at one time. Josh's comment at the end of this is classic.
Bottle Tree
August 22, 2011
One of papa's bottles.
After the window seat was done, I trimmed down a sturdy bush at the corner of one of our fields, and we turned it into a bottle tree.

Saturday Projects
August 21, 2011

Mel painted our window seat Saturday. She says if she's going to do something, she's going to do it all the way... no inch left unpainted.
Clemson 2011 Football Predictions
August 19, 2011You might not be aware of this, but woohooing during Tiger Rag sounds awful. Stop it.

Here's a quick rundown of what's going to happen this football season:
Week 1: Troy Trojans
Clemson wins, but it will be a more stressful game for me than it should be.
Clemson: 1-0
Week 2: Wofford Terriers
Easy Clemson win
Clemson: 2-0
Week 3: Auburn
Before the 2010 season, I said Clemson would lose at Auburn, and they did. Not this year. Clemson squeaks by a drastically depleted Auburn.
Clemson 3-0
Week 4: Florida State
With stellar recruiting and a coaching change, the Noles appear to have regained their swagger (ask Marcus Lattimore). FSU’s offensive line will plow Clemson’s defensive line after the first quarter, and Kevin Steele still has not demonstrated that he has an answer for mobile quarterbacks like EJ Manuel. Clemson loses, and I just hope it doesn’t get ugly for the Tigers.
Clemson 3-1
Week 5: at Virginia Tech
Interesting game here between Chad Morris and Bud Foster. I think Clemson will lose either way, but if it is a night game, Clemson might be embarrassed.
Clemson 3-2
Week 6: Boston College
This game will be a surprising shootout, as you don’t normally think of Boston College as a scoring machine. However, Clemson only has two defensive tackles to play against an always stout BC offensive line. This will allow Montel Harris to run wild, if he’s healthy. BC likes to stay in their base 4-3 defense, and I don’t think that’ll work against Chad Morris’s offense. Clemson wins.
Clemson 4-2
Week 7: at Maryland
It’s hard to call this one right now since Maryland has a new coach. I think Randy Edsall beat Soccer Liner in a bowl a couple of years ago at UConn, so he might be dangerous. I’ll mark this one down as Clemson’s annual lay-a-turd game. Clemson loss.
Clemson 4-3
Week 8: UNC
The Tarheels still have some ballers on defense, but Death Valley and a new UNC coaching staff equals a Clemson win.
Clemson 5-3
Week 9: at Gimmick Tech Yellow Bees
I hate, hate, hate to say this, but Clemson’s shallow defensive tackle depth will really bite them in this game. Gimmick Tech’s B-back might have a monster game. Clemson loses.
Clemson 5-4
Week 11: Wake Forest
I haven’t worried about Wake Forest since Bowden was on the side line. Clemson wins.
Clemson 6-4
Week 12: at NC State
I don’t know much about NC State this year, except they’ll have a new quarterback. Let’s say Clemson wins.
Clemson 7-4
Week 13: at Soccer Liner Chickens
Oh boy, this is not going to be a good offseason for Clemson fans. My chicken friends might as well pop the champagne because Clemson will not stop Soccer Liner for an uncharacteristic third straight year. During last year’s game, I made Mel hide my phone from me. It will be the same story this year, because if I have my phone during this game, I will certainly put something on Facebook that nobody wants to read.
Clemson 7-5
Maily Doesn't Want To Go
August 17, 2011How Do We Sleep While Our Beds Are Burning
We had Haden's birthday party today. Some kids are sleeping over and, as usual, we took a midnight walk.

Planking at Lowe's

Planking at Belk
Whew, that was a long walk. Again, I'll say that too many people are shocked to see other people out walking. Get over it; walking is normal... or at least it should be.
Window Seat Project: Day 5
August 13, 2011
I finished the construction of the window seat this morning. Now we're going to paint it, buy cushions, and I will install rope lighting to illuminate the space underneath the seat.
Here's a breakdown of the costs of the project so far (not including rope lighting, paint, and cushions).
| PLYWOOD | 113 | |
| 2X4 LUMBER | 50 | |
| HARDWARE (Screws, nails, braces) | 54 |
The Eagles once said, "A man can use his back, or use his brain." Well, I like using both. The design of this window seat is my own, and I did 100% of the labor.
Window Seat Project: Day 4

I got caught up at the Northside orientation and didn't get to finish tonight, but all I have left is to cut and attach the rest of the plywood. That won't take long, and I'll have it done by Haden's birthday party. Mel still has to paint it, though.
I decided to plank today's progress. I'm silly.
Window Seat Project: Day 3
August 10, 2011
Good progress today. I'll probably finish this sucker tomorrow.
I'm using my Papa's circular saw for this project, by the way. It's the first time I've ever used it since I inherited it in 1998.

Window Seat Project: Day 2
August 8, 2011
Here's today's progress on the window seat. I have to take Haden to football practice tomorrow, so I won't be back on this until Wednesday.
Window Seat Project: Day 1
August 7, 2011
Today, the boys and I got to work on our window seat project for the sitting room.

Here's today's progress. I would have gotten more done if I had enough screws.

Glen Falls
August 5, 2011

There were a lot of waterfalls in the Franklin/Highlands area. Here we are in front of one of the three waterfalls at Glen Falls. That was a pretty good hike.
Bust Your Butt Falls
August 4, 2011There's a little place between Highlands and Franklin called Bust Your Butt Falls. I made the jump, but I wouldn't let the boys do it.

We like climbing on things.
Until That Rooster Came in the Yard
August 3, 2011Saturday night, we went to a bluegrass concert in Franklin. The ad for the show promised "hand clapping and toe tapping". I was thinking, "Hand clapping and toe tapping? I hope it doesn't get out of hand at this concert. Should we let Will and Haden see this?"
Now, I've seen Motley Crue. I've seen Godsmack. I've seen Kid Rock. I've seen Buck Cherry. But, this concert was crazy. Fortunately, I was able to capture the wildest moment of the evening. Don't watch this in front of kids. Take a look:
Did you see him walk his foot out, then walk it back in? That goes way outside the boundary of decent toe tapping. He is doggone lucky the police didn't see him do that.
Seriously though, the band did play a very nice rendition of John Denver's Country Roads.
The Cullasaja River

Look at the determination on his face. "MUST. HAVE. FUN!!"

gettin' down and dirty

This part of the river was relatively calm compared to the other areas we visited.
