GI Bill $3000 Emergency Payment Recall

April 11, 2010

I had this nice letter waiting for me when I came home.

LETTER FROM VA 2010-03-30B

...and my response:

Department of Veterans Affairs
Debt Management Center
Bishop Henry Whipple Federal Building
PO Box 11930
St. Paul, MN 55111-0930

The enclosed letter states that my debt has been reduced by $576, according to your “records”. I need to see the justification for that number.

I will promptly remit any payments that I received, but was not entitled to. However, I believe I was entitled to more than $576 for the entire Fall 2009 semester. If I am incorrect about that, then prove it by sending me a month-by-month breakdown of the benefits I should have received compared to the benefits the VA actually remitted.

Your letter also raises some questions: Why did you try to collect the entire $3000 to begin with? Did you not review my account beforehand? On how many other veterans are you trying to over-collect? If the VA can be this persistent in collecting perceived debts, is there someone at the VA who is equally persistent in seeing that benefits are timely and accurately paid to veterans? It certainly appears that is not the case.

...which is basically what I told them to do the first time they contacted me about this.
